My experience in Venice is a dark one.. I spent much of it asleep, or awake during the early morning hours before the sun was up. In the last day or two on Corfu I began to have.. umm.. loose stools. That’s right.. Travelers dysentery. While I did get to enjoy some of the sights Venice has to offer I also got to see a lot of the bathroom. Along with that I had abdominal cramps and a fever. For some reason the whole hotel was heated up at night too, so I would sleep with the window open. One night I actually spent half the night on the cool tile floor. I was tired after just a few hours of walking and would lay down to rest at 5 or 6 only to wake up at midnight, sweating.
I did get out to see St Mark’s square, wander the streets, do a little shopping, and on the last afternoon visited St. Mark’s Basilica. While I certainly didn’t get to everything the city has to offer, I did get enough of a taste to satisfy my immediate desire, with plans to return.
With the reading I had done and conversations I had with other travelers I was prepared for the fact that traveling solo to this romantic locale may have my feeling lovelorn. Ill even admit to having some feelings of wanting to share the experience, but I kept reminding myself that a second trip here would be just as special as the first.
Getting lost in Venice is as easy as walking out the door of the hotel. If you want to get really lost: Wander for 10 minutes without taking stock of the direction you’re headed and cross at least two bridges. Now, find your way back without using any “street” wider than 5 feet. Just remember, you can't go too far... you're on a island.
The original “Sin City”, Venice is still a magical place to behold..
Now onto Florence by train…
