Athens

Athens

After a bus ride, then overnight ferry, then another bus, I finally arrive in Athens. Turns out I probably could have purchased a plane ticket for the same money and been here 20 hours earlier. ;-)

Doesn’t matter.. The view of the Acropolis from the rooftop bar of the Athens BackPackers Hostel is wonderful. The people who work there are great and the other travelers are nice too. Reminds me of my pleasant stay in Rome.

Like Rome, so much history here too. Had a simple but wonderful walking tour of the city to start, and then ventured out with new friends.

I discovered the difference between a Souvlaki and a Gyro, then realized some people don’t follow the definitions anyway. Regardless.. Mm mm good. Healthy too!

Undoubtedly some people well at this point realize I haven’t mentioned food that much.. Don’t worry I have a separate post for that later.

There was a minor train strike while I was here.. And even one or two very small 20-40 people demonstrations. Nothing that would hint at the tragedy that would come just a week or so later.

While no slouch before, traveling has made me even more keenly aware of world events.

Seeing the sights was amazing, but I did notice that I was starting to get a little jaded to seeing so much of it. After all it’s just another ancient building from a culture that helped form the foundation of the western world and whose political, scientific, philosophical, and social ideas are the cornerstone of American ideals. Yeah.. Not much to see here..

Well a trip to Mykonos island for a quick vacation from my agenda-laden sightseeing ought to be the trick. Yes.. That’s right.. A vacation.. From my vacation.. Life’s Rough. (hey..a wise frog once told me “It’s not easy being green.”)
