Stage Two Completed

As of 0/18/07 I have completed my clinical time. Highland was such and amazing place to do my clinical internship at. The nursing staff was warm and friendly, getting me involved and making me feel as part of the regular staff within just mintues of my arrival.

While I was assigned to one nurse the whole nursing staff took my under their wing. They would all happily assign me tasks and teach me new skills. I would frequently get overhead pages to report to this place or that, making me feel as if my precense there was actually helpful and not a burden. By the last few shifts I was virtually autonomous getting reports from patients, filling out charts, discussing treatments with nurses, carrying out those treatments, and then reassessing.

They let me get right in the thick of it during major incidents. Even the doctors would get me invovled and keep me informed. On numerous occasions I was mistaken for a nurse or respitory therapist. I take that as a compliment on my demanour and ablity to provide a well educated report.

The staff was so incredible with their patient care. In my few years of work as an EMT I have yet to see and ER run by more compitent and knowledgable staff. One of the most mind blowing things was the extrodinary relationship they have with the EMS crews who deliver patients. I can tell you that kind of positive exchange is so rare I have yet to see it anywhere else.

The experience was so positive It has me thinking that after I finish my time in medic school, if I find the job to be less cerebral than I'de like.. ER nursing as a very real option.

For now though... It's on to Stage Three: Field Internship
